A tree's most visible features can hide much of its story. Cylburn Arboretum's Nature Education Center invites visitors to look at roots, canopy and internal layers, then carry those questions into the surrounding landscape.
The center opened in 2023 after renovation and expansion of the historic carriage house. Its exhibit hall includes an exposed root system overhead, a view of tree canopy on the floor and an exploration of a tree's inner layers. A teaching garden beside the building also connects planting with stormwater management.
Starting October 20, 2026, the arboretum's Tuesday–Sunday grounds hours become 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; Mondays are closed. The Nature Education Center has a separate schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and the first and second Sundays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Check current notices before planning around an indoor visit.
Choose one relationship to follow outside: how water moves, where a tree's shade falls or what grows beneath a canopy. Stay on designated routes and leave specimens in place. Cylburn is at 4915 Greenspring Avenue. A short indoor introduction followed by a modest walk can make familiar-looking trees more interesting without turning the outing into a test of names.
